The 21st century has been marked with new dangers and opportunities in the realm of foreign policy. Developments such as the collapse of the Eastern Bloc and the advance of communication technologies led to the rapid elimination of borders between countries. On the one hand, there are great new opportunities for economic growth and development, while on the other, the threats of terrorism, ethnic conflict and excessive fluctuations in financial markets continue.
Economics and Foreign Policy are more connected than ever in this new century. Economic crises now frequently spill over national boundaries. Just as it has been the case in the field of economics, foreign policy now too has important non-state actors. Interest groups and non-governmental organizations are connected internationally and have a significant influence in international relations.
A significant development in Turkey's recent history has been the launch of EU accession negotiations in 2005 upon the EU Summit on October 3. With this decision, Turkey's EU integration process is no longer solely a foreign policy matter. Negotiations for full membership and harmonization with the Acquis Communautaire require profound structural transformation in Turkey.
Foreign Policy Studies carries out studies taking into account the mentioned developments in the realm of foreign policy in the world and the region upon the awareness that Turkey will proceed in the process of economic transformation in interaction with the foreign policy developments.
