Corruption is the single most detrimental scourge to economic activity, distribution of wealth and cause of poverty.
Corruption is one of the main problems that Turkey must resolve, particularly on its path to EU membership. In policies combating corruption, the raising of awareness of the public is just as important as the state's official institutions.
To this effect, EPRI (Economic Policies Research Institution) organized a conference with the cooperation of TOBB-ETU entitled "Combating Corruption" on 7-8th July 2005, Thursday and Friday in Ankara.
Opening speeches were made by Justice Minister Mr. Cemil Çiçek, Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister Abdüllatif Şener, Minister of Education Hüseyin Çelik, World Bank Country Director for Turkey Mr. Andrew Vorkink, Delegation of European Commission of Turkey, Counsellor Mr. Martin Dawson and President of TOBB Mr. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu. In addition, there were speakers from ministries, representatives of European Commission and European Counsel as well as local and foreign academics.
