Turkey and Cyprus expert of the International Crisis Group (ICG), Hugh Pope, visited TEPAV once again on May 4, 2009. This signified TEPAV's fifth meeting on the South Caucasus. During his speech, as in previous meetings Pope shared the results of the most recent ICG report. The most recent ICG report addresses Turkey-Armenia relations and is titled "Turkey and Armenia: Opening Minds, Opening Borders". At the first part of his speech, Pope touched upon the benefits of the normalization of the relations between Turkey and Armenia for both parties. Stating that the closure of the borders for sixteen years had no positive contribution to the solution of Nagorno-Karabakh problem, Pope argued that Armenian markets are already full of Turkish products and that the opening of the borders will make significant contributions to the enhancement of trade relations between two countries, this time through official channels. At the second part of his speech, Pope addressed the roles of third-party countries and pointed outAzerbaijan as the most important among these. After commenting on the potential reasons behind the change in the Azerbaijani public opinion on this topic, Pope touched upon the impact of Turkey-Armenia relations on Turkish-American relations. Following his speech, Pope answered questions from the participants and the participants shared their different views on this topic.
