Priorities for the Upcoming German Presidency: Turkey on the Agenda?

TEPAV|EPRI held a round-table meeting with SPD Delegation from Hessen State Parliament on September 7th, 2006 at TOBB-ETÜ University Senate Room.

The SPD delegation consists of Former Interior Minister Gerhard Bökel, Former Education Minister Hartmut Holzapfel, and Former MEP Ozan Ceyhun along with five other members. After the presentation made by Dr. Güven Sak, TEPAV's Executive Director, on the "Transformation of the Turkish Economy", SPD's perspective on Turkey's EU accession process was discussed. The role of local chambers was also addressed to strengthen the local governance capacity in Turkey.

During the meeting, dynamics of the working populations in Germany and Turkey were compared, in the frame of Turkey's fore coming potential contributions to EU's economy. The importance of skill training for the work market by women and young population was emphasized to sustain the competitiveness of the European economic area which is based upon research and technology.
