ANKARA - The Common Agenda Report, published by the United Nations Secretary-General on the 77th anniversary of the United Nations, was presented at the meeting titled “UN at 77: Our Common Agenda” hosted by TEPAV on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. The prominent topics of the report were discussed together with the questions posed by the speakers and participants, and public information was provided.

Ambassador Ömer Önhon, Director of TEPAV Center for Eurasian Political Security and Cooperation, who delivered the opening speech within the scope of the introduction of the report, started his speech by expressing the founding notions of the United Nations and the importance of its role in shaping the future. Pointing to the mediating function of the United Nations especially in times of conflict, Önhon stated that action should be taken to prevent future crises and left the floor to Alvaro Rodriguez, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Turkey.

Alvaro Rodriguez drew attention to issues such as the fight against climate change, the Russia-Ukraine war and accelerated regional conflicts in the midst of the energy crisis, which was prioritized within the scope of the United Nations General Assembly held in September. However, he stated that since the establishment of the United Nations, wars have visibly decreased and the organization has created an environment of reconciliation. In the continuation of his speech, Rodriguez conveyed the important topics of our Common Agenda Report and stated that a new vision should be created for a sustainable future. Accordingly, the 12 commitments constituting the Common Agenda were arrayed as;

  • Not leaving anyone behind in terms of development,
  • Protecting the world,
  • To promote peace and prevent war,
  • To ensure justice and comply with international law,
  • To put women and girls at the center,
  • Build trust,
  • Developing digital cooperation,
  • To ensure that the United Nations is updated,
  • To secure sustainable finance,
  • Increasing partnership,
  • Working with young people,
  • Being ready for crises.

Rodriguez also concluded his presentation by stating the importance of realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The discussion part of the meeting, together with Ömer Önhon's comments on the presentation, was shaped in line with the questions posed by the participants. In this chapter; how to realize the change needed by the United Nations, the future of the Security Council, its necessity and inclusiveness, and the necessary steps to prevent political deadlocks were among the highlights.
