ASAV - Supply Chain Analysis for the Food Industry

Ongoing Project: (June 2011 - March 2013)

Funding Source: ASAV

The main objective of the Project is to analyze the selected 8 sub-sectors of the food industry, so as to determine potentials and constraints regarding the raw material availability, production, employment and foreign trade in these sub-sectors, and conducting research to develop policy recommendations to exploit the potentials and overcome the identified bottlenecks.

The study is has two stages:

  1. Analysis of the selected 8 food industry sub-sectors,
  2. Detailed supply chain analyses in the selected 3 sub-sectors, determining the potentials and constraints within in the supply chain and designing alternative policy recommendations to overcome identified constraints and exploit the potentials.

A general assessment related to the food industry is made in the beginning of the Project. At this stage, through a comprehensive literature and data survey, the current situation is assessed and the potential and bottlenecks were determined. The raw material, production, consumption, employment and foreign trade data on the basis of domestic and international markets were collected and analyzed regarding the 8 sub-sectors. The presentations of these studies had been conducted and the draft reports have been submitted.

In the second stage of the Project, a detailed supply chain analysis will be conducted in the 3 sub-sectors selected by the Advisory Board. All the stages starting from the cultivation of the raw materials, to their conduction into the production process and from production processes to the marketing of the final product will be determined; raw material costs and the relation between price and demand will be analyzed; the potential of the sectors will be determined and the obstacles to reaching these potentials will be evaluated in this last stage.

Main Outputs

  • Preparing a report on the studies conducted on the current situation of the 8 sub-sectors.
  • Elaboration of the information obtained from the current studies through the focus group meetings held by the sector specialists and producers and field studies.
  • Preparing a repot on the detailed supply chain analysis in the 3 sub-sectors, as to determine the potentials and constraints in the supply chain and to develop alternative policy recommendations in order to exploit identified potentials and to eliminate the obstacles.
